I received my first camera at the age of 10 as a Christmas present from my Grandparents. My Grandfather was an avid amateur photographer and he knew I wanted to be just like him. It was a Kodak Ektralite 110 with automatic flash. I immediately took to taking pictures of anything and everything until my parents got sick of buying film and paying to develop it. When I was 16, my Grandfather gave me one of his Kodak 35mm cameras and I was thrilled to pieces. That was when I began taking close-ups and using the telephoto lens for distances. It wasn’t until 2006 when I got my first (or rather Mom’s first) digital camera that my interest in photography really took off. Finally, I could take several pictures of one item to ensure that at least one photo would come out perfectly without worrying about running out of film or wasting film. Better still, I could download to my computer as soon as I got home to see how they turned out. Best of all, I never have to pay for pictures that don’t come out right. Now that I have my own camera, currently a Sony Cybershot 12X Optical Zoom with rechargeable AA batteries, I don’t even have to worry about the battery running out on me and I find myself to be completely unlimited in where and how many shots I can take.
As to the where I take my shots, my mother could tell you about the lengths I will go to in order to get that perfect shot. One afternoon, traveling on Route 100A in Vermont, I pulled over beside a lake/pond because I saw some white water lilies that I wanted a picture of. The embankment was steep and very high. I went down while Mom waited in the care with our friend. As I got to the bottom, I took off my shoes and discovered that they were out a ways. “Well, at least Mom can’t see me, so I will just wade out to them.” I thought as I looked up at the top and could not see the car. Well, those lilies were out further than I thought, and the water was deeper than I thought. By the time I got out to them, I was halfway up my chest in water. “Well, at least Mom can’t see this,” I thought again as I looked up the embankment. But to my horror, I could not only see the car, but also Mom glaring down at me with the ‘hairy eyeball’ and our friend in the back seat laughing. “Well, too late now,” I thought. “Since I’m already out hear I might as well take the pictures.” Even Mom had to admit that they were beautiful pictures. And at least I kept my shoes dry!
